The 17th Pyongyang International Film Festival opened with due ceremony on Friday at the Pyongyang International Cinema House. Present at the ceremony were Vice-Premier Jon Kwang Ho, Cha Hui Rim, chairman of the Pyongyang City People's Committee, officials concerned, creators and artistes of film industry, citizens and honorary guests, delegations and delegates from China, Russia, Sweden, Australia and Canada, international jury members of the DPRK, China, Russia, Cuba and Sweden. Foreign diplomatic envoys and representatives of the missions of international bodies, military attaches and members of foreign embassies here, foreign guests and overseas compatriots staying here were invited to the festival. There was a briefing on the films presented to the festival. Jong Yong Nam, director-general of the National Administration of Motion Picture Industry and chairman of the Festival Organizing Committee, made an opening speech. He warmly greeted the participants and said that the festival has contributed to deepening the ties among countries and peoples in the world and developing national films in the idea of independence, peace and friendship. He expressed the belief that the festival would be successfully held to fulfill the expectations of the Korean people and the progressive moviemen of the world. The international jury members were introduced. The chairman of the international jury made a congratulatory speech. At the end of the ceremony the participants watched a feature film of the Russian Federation.
